Item Details

For your consideration is this vintage 1964 Epiphone Al Caiola Custom hollowbody electric guitar. This particular example, serial 68404, is in near mint 100% all original condition and includes a non-original Epiphone hard case! Undeniably one of the most interesting and unique guitars made by Gibson during this period, the Epiphone Al Caiola Custom was the only model to feature a 25.5" scale length, in addition to, a small collection of other very interesting characteristics specific to this model only! This is a very rare opportunity to buy a very rare guitar, so take advantage of this No Reserve auction with FREE USA shipping with discounted International delivery, and remember that the high bidder wins... regardless of price!

This '64 Al Caiola Custom features: the original cherry sunburst finish, laminated maple top with 7-ply binding, double bound laminated maple back and sides, mahogany neck, bound rosewood fingerboard with block inlays, (2) patent no. mini-humbuckers, bound headstock with fat column peghead inlay, trapeze tailpiece with Caiola Model wood insert, Gibson ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge with ebony base, Grover (Pat. Pend.) tuning machines, 25 1/2" scale, 1 11/16" nut width, 1 15/16" depth full hollowbody (ES-330) construction, a zero fret and a non-original Epiphone hard shell case.

This guitar is an absolute player's dream: it features a wide 1 11/16" nut width, a super comfortable slim taper neck profile, factory large frets, no f-holes which reduce usual hollowbody feedback and 5 tone option switches. It weighs a super light 6 lbs. and 10 oz., and features a very thoughtful combination of cool appointments unique to this model, which make it an extremely versatile guitar. While a Gibson Varitone offers a limited 6 tonal varieties, the 5 tone switches (in conjunction with the rhythm/treble switch) can be used to create 54 different tones (if I calculated the permutation correctly) which represents versatility unlike any other Gibson model. Additionally, all of the switches offer very functional and usable tone options, unlike the Varitone. It is intonated perfectly, and thanks to the straight neck has very low and pleasant action.

If you are a connoisseur of condition, then you will certainly appreciate this guitar. This no issues example is void of all significant damage with no cracks, no breaks, no repairs, no modifications, etc. Sure the nickel-plated hardware has oxidized slightly and there are some traces of minimal weather-checking, but otherwise the guitar is almost like new. There is some minimal heat damage on the top part of the back of the headstock that resulted in several small heat bubbles, but are rather faint in appearance and not too distracting.

The original cherry sunburst finish has not faded in the slightest. There is very minimal fret wear, mostly refined to the zero fret, and there is no pick wear. There is very little, yet typical, superficial wear on the back of the body.

The case is brand new and is in perfect condition. Famously played by Al Caiola, and Barry Tashian of The Remains, this rare Artist model is perfect for both players and collectors, so don't miss out on this opportunity to buy one on eBay with NO RESERVE and FREE U.S.A. shipping!
